Do You Really Need Hiking Boots? Or Will Trainers Do?

by | Last modified on Dec 8, 2025 | HD

When I first got into hiking, I had one big question: do I really need proper hiking boots? Or can I just chuck on my everyday trainers and hope for the best?

If you’ve ever stood at the trailhead staring down at your feet, wondering the same thing—welcome to the club! Let’s break it down together and figure out what’s right for you.

What’s the Real Difference Anyway?

In simple terms, hiking boots are built for the trail. They’re usually tougher, offer ankle support, have grippier soles, and are often waterproof. Trainers, on the other hand, are lighter, more breathable, and often feel like walking on clouds—at least on pavements!

Think of hiking boots as the 4×4 of footwear, and trainers as your trusty hatchback. Both can get you places, but one’s made for bumpier roads.

When Trainers Might Be Just Fine

Trainers can absolutely work for certain types of walks—especially if you’re just getting started. Here’s when they might be a good shout:

  • You’re walking a well-marked, dry path
  • The hike is short and relatively flat
  • You want to go light and fast
  • You’re testing the waters and not ready to invest in boots just yet

They’re breathable, comfy, and chances are, you already own a pair.

When Hiking Boots Are Definitely Worth It

There are times when trainers just won’t cut it. If you’re heading into rougher terrain or unpredictable weather, proper boots can be a lifesaver (or at least a foot-saver):

  • Muddy, rocky or steep trails
  • Cold, wet, or changeable weather
  • Multi-day hikes or carrying a heavy rucksack
  • Needing that extra ankle support or foot protection

In those situations, Hiking Boots are definitely worth considering. They’ll give you the grip, support, and durability that trainers just can’t match.

Comfort Is Queen (and King!)

No matter what you choose, comfort is key. A badly fitting boot—or even a too-small trainer—can turn a dream hike into a disaster full of blisters and limping.

Boots usually need a bit of breaking in, while trainers tend to feel good straight out the box. But don’t let that put you off. If the boots fit well, they’ll become your best trail buddy.

What I’ve Learnt from Trying Both

I’ve done hikes in trainers where I felt like I was flying—until I hit a bog and ended up with soggy socks for miles. And I’ve had days in hiking boots where the ankle support saved me from a nasty roll on uneven ground.

Nowadays, I use both. For easy local walks? Trainers. But if it’s steep, wet or wild—I’m lacing up my boots.

So… Do You Need Hiking Boots?

Here’s the honest truth: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

If you’re just starting out and sticking to easy trails, trainers might be totally fine. But if you’re planning longer or tougher hikes—or just want that extra support—Hiking Boots are a solid investment.

Try both. See how your feet feel. And remember, you don’t have to get it perfect straight away—just comfortable enough to get out there and enjoy the walk!

The trail’s not going anywhere, and neither are your choices. So take your time, find what works for you, and let your feet lead the way.
